Carmen Lerner is trying to defy all odds by attending the UFL showcases without any college experience. Lerner has been playing semi-professional football looking for an opportunity to take his game to the next level, and the UFL showcases presented an opportunity he could not pass up. Carmen Lerneris an athlete who can play multiple positions, including linebacker on defense, and wide receiver on offense.

Versatility Key to his Value
Carmen Lerner may stand just 5’10 195 pounds but he is built like a linebacker, and could be a special teams maven at the next level having played both ways for most of his post collegiate career. At wide receiver he runs solid routes, knows how to find the holes in zone coverage, and will often break arm tackles after the catch.
I would be curious to see Carmen Lerner play some running back as well, and return kicks. On the right team he could play on every unit, including most special teams units as well. On defense you can see his mentality as an offense primary player shine through. He tracks the ball well, and knows how to key on what a quarterback is doing, likely because of his time practicing scramble drills as a wide out.

: Frank RocheWatching him come off the edge, or play as a stand up linebacker, he looks like he has a knack for shooting gaps, and is not afraid to lay the wood when he meets a running back or quarterback in the back field. Granted there are not many 5’10 linebackers in the UFL, perhaps the CFL is a possibility for him as a linebacker. In the UFL he is more than likely going to be looked at as a WR or an in the box strong safety, or nickel linebacker.
What makes him valuable is his ability to fill many roles for any team. Whether it’s being used on special teams, offense, or defense you can find value with Lerner on your roster. Especially if you are looking to increase depth at many positions with a single player.
Workout Warrior
Taking the time to look at his instagram page and you will see this is not your average semi-professional player, he is in the gym often, and is not afraid to invest in himself to get where he wants to be on the football field. He has recently trained with Sky Development working on his strength, and explosion, and from the looks of his videos…all the work is paying off.
Most people look at the 40 yard dash as the end all be all of a wide receiver’s game, but I would offer up another thought. The 10-yard split is more important, that first step, and burst to accelerate in and out of breaks is far more imporant, and a lot of the drills you see in his videos are designed to work on exactly that.
Down with DC
Making the leap from semi-professional football to the UFL is no easy task, and it may require some added steps along the way such as playing professional indoor football, or trying his hand at leagues like the IFA, LFA, ELF, or GFL. Getting outdoor film against a higher level of competition will help his case. He is no stranger to these showcases having attended the XFL showcases in late 2022.

Going to the DC showcase was a smart move on his part. DC has shown they are not afraid to bring in players with alternative forms of experience in the past, and while they were not the only team in attendance, they may be his best chance at making it on a UFL roster. Other teams that could take a look include San Antonio, and Houston.
Having just turned 27 years old, without the wear and tear of most college athletes, he may actually present a player with the right tools to be a great developmental prospect given the lack of professional level coaching he has received in the past.
