Kenny Lewis Jr., WR UFL Showcase Player Highlight

Watching film of Kenny Lewis Jr. I am reminded of Randy Moss in his deceptive speed, leaping ability, and prowess with making contest catches. He doesn’t appear to run very fast but he’s a long strider who gains ground quickly and leaves defensive backs reeling as he runs by them. He is a big play threat who averaged over 18 yards per reception at Morehead State, but also added value as a kick and punt returner. Could he be a diamond in the rough just waiting to be discovered? Could the UFL Showcases be the exact opportunity he needs to put himself on the map?

Basketball Skills Translate to Wideout

Coming out of Loyola High School Kenny Lewis Jr. was All Conference in Football and Basketball. He would finish off his football career racking up 1,100 yards and 12 touchdowns on just 45 receptions, showcasing his big play ability, and most of an ability to leap over would be defenders.

Kenny Lewis Jr. began his collegiate career at small West Virginia Wesleyan University where he didn’t immediately see the field on the football team, but did make an impact on the hardwood. The young player saw limited time but managed to but managed to score 10 points in just 7 minutes. During this same stretch he played sparingly for the football team, but made his presence known in 2020. Appearing in just 1 game, he caught 3 passes for 71 yards and 2 touchdowns. He would begin to focus on football after the 2019-2020 season, and it immediately helped him ratchet up his production on the gridiron.

His final season at West Virginia Wesleyan came in 2021 where he managed to catch 29 passes racking up 465 yards and 5 touchdowns. This helped him find some interest from Morehead State where he would spend the 2022 season as a graduate student showing how he could stretch the field and force defenses to defend the long game.

He would finish the 2022 season with 27 receptions for 498 yards, and 5 touchdowns. He also added 13 kick returns for 269 yards, and 6 punt returns for 44 yards. An average of 18.4 yards per reception, 20.7 per kick return, 7.3 per punt return.

What Does the Tape Say?

As mentioned before Kenny Lewis Jr. has deceptive speed, but he isn’t necessarily a burner by any stretch of the imagination. Often times he was making contested catches, or high-pointing the ball over a defensive back. One trait that sticks out and many of his touchdown catches is his balance.

Contact-balance is a buzz word for running backs but it’s one I will borrow to describe Kenny Lewis Jr. here. There were multiple big plays he made based on his ability to make a catch in traffic, remain on his feet, bounce off some would-be tacklers in the process then sprint toward the endzone. He has strong hands, making countless catches despite contact before and during the catch.

In an interview with NFL Draft Diamonds he had an interesting answer for which NFL player he would like to hang out with:

Stefon Diggs. Lots of people say we act alike and his personality is unbeatable and he’s a dog on the field. His passion for the game which sometimes gets confused as anger and selfishness is something that always caught my attention because he’s far from a bad teammate.

Kenny Lewis Jr.’s NFL Interest

He spent the 2023 season attempting to find an opportunity in the XFL showcases. Before returning to attend the 2024 UFL Showcases he worked out with the New England Patriots. According to Kenny Lewis Jr. the workout went well and he was hoping to hear back. He has not placed all his eggs in that basket and remains diligent in vetting every potential opportunity of continuing his career. Saying he hopes it’s with the NFL, but he will happily consider other options such as UFL, CFL. He doesn’t even dismiss arena ball if it means staying in game shape while finding his next step.
