One of the original members of the Seattle Kraken will stick around to hold down the defensive line. Adam Larsson has decided to stick in Seattle for several more seasons.
Adam Larsson, 31, who was heading into the final season of a four-year, $16 million contract he signed with the Kraken after being selected in the 2021 NHL Expension Draft, was signed to a four-year, $21 million extension, as announced this past Tuesday. Per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Larsson’s salary will be $5.25 million each season.

In his three years with the Kraken, he missed just one game, with that one game coming last season, where he put up four goals and 18 points, blocking 151 shots and racking up 162 hits, developing into one of the steadiest players for the Kraken.

Kraken Keep Their Top Lockdown Defender, Adam Larsson
Adam Larsson has excelled with the Kraken, getting more defensive responsibility with the team at this point in his career than any point he had previously between the New Jersey Devils and the Edmonton Oilers. In his time with the Kraken, he averaged 22:57 of ice time in 245 games with a franchise that is about to head into its fourth year of existence. His constant availability and consistency would get him an extension in and of itself, but Adam Larsson chipping in on offense with 20 goals and 76 points in that span sweetens it up.
Adam Larsson led the team in blocks and hits during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, and while he dropped to second and fourth in those categories last season, he is largely unfazed by the slight drop off in stats. The only drawback to his game is possession quality, though that can be attributed to him averaging a 55.4% Defensive Zone Start Percentage in his time with the Kraken.

With the addition of Brandon Montour on a seven-year deal in the offseason, the Kraken’s defensive core is intact, with Adam Larsson under contract until the 2029 season, a year after Vince Dunn’s contract ends. They should be together for at least three or four years. A potential trade candidate has been taken off the board for other teams around the league, and the Kraken have made it clear they believe they have the core intact to become a perrenial playoff contender in the NHL.
