CFL Quarterback Carousel

Tre Ford, Davis Alexander, Vernon Adams, Cody Fajardo, McLeod Bethel-Thompson, Pj Walker, and now Jake Maier have already found homes for 2025. Where did they land, and what dominoes will fall with these names already finding teams?

Free agency in any football league is a lot like a pond one stone falls and ripples follow. The Tre Ford and Davis Alexander extensions helped create the need for the trade that saw Edmonton and Montreal swap veteran signal callers. The moves made by Calgary to extend Pj Walker, and acquire Vernon Adams made Jake Maier expendable. Saskatchewan, choosing to extend Trevor Harris knowing his injury history, made it necessary to acquire a veteran backup quarterback. However, with each move made there were more names affected.

Montreal Alouettes

After extending Davis Alexander, and swapping Fajardo for MBT, the Alouettes still have two players left as free agents at the position. Caleb Evans served as their third quarterback and short yardage option, and Dominique Davis was a depth player as well. Currently the Alouettes still have James Morgan, a former NFL player, and USFL signal caller on the roster.

This could lead to the Als moving on from Caleb Evans and Dominique Davis, or they could look to re-sign one of the two quarterbacks. Currently both players remain unsigned. They both have ties with other organizations as well, it would not be entirely surprising to see either or both end up in a new city for 2025.

Caleb Evans

Evans will turn 27 years old in 2025 after he suffered a season-ending injury in early August of 2024. Evans has 16 starts over four seasons in the CFL and appeared in 52 games primarily serving as a short yardage option in Ottawa and Montreal. He has attempted 480 passes for 3,463 yards, 16 touchdowns to 22 interceptions, while rushing 203 times for 941 yards and 31 touchdowns. Between college and the CFL the 220 pound QB has scored 67 rushing touchdowns making him a perfect short yardage option if healthy.

Update: Montreal announced they have re-signed Caleb Evans for the 2025 season. I believe this was the right move for Montreal, even if Evans is not healthy to start the season, his value in the run game could prove crucial down the stretch. He has a nose for the endzone and converting first downs.

Dominique Davis

Davis will turn 36 years old in July and could very well have played his last CFL snaps. Davis graduated from East Carolina University in 2011. He was an undrafted free agent who found a home as a backup behind his former college teammate Matt Ryan. Sticking with Atlanta for most of two seasons he had briefs stints with the Titans and Colts in 2014 before surfacing in the CFL with Calgary in 2015 who released him during training camp.

He landed with Winnipeg where he launched what has developed into a nine-year CFL career. He has spent time with Winnipeg, Ottawa, BC, Montreal and Calgary. These ties to several organizations and coaches could lead to further interest in 2025. However, there are some interesting names in a free agency he has to contend with. Over his career he has shown himself to be more valuable as a runner than a passer over doubling his career passing touchdowns on the ground. He has just under 3,800 career passing yards, 14 tds to 21 ints, with 504 yards and 33 touchdowns on the ground. He did not attempt a pass in 2024 but ran 19 times for 39 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Ottawa Redblacks

The Redblacks have not made waves at quarterback by signing players. After choosing to retain Tyrie Adams on a one year extension in October, Ottawa has left former starters Jeremiah Masoli, and Dustin Crum unsigned to this point.

Jeremiah Masoli

Masoli is set to turn 37 years old during the 2025 season but would come with 58 starts in 89 games during his CFL career. Masoli still has value as a veteran backup to certain teams but his options outside of Ottawa are quickly dwindling. This might end up as one of those retirements where the teams in the league make the choice for him.

Dustin Crum

Crum is a young player who has a career completion rate of 68.9% in three seasons as a professional quarterback. He has 14 career starts and value as a short yardage runner. He filled this role in 2024 for Ottawa serving as depth behind Brown but never entered the game as a starter. The soon-to-be 26 year old managed to complete 31 of 45 passing attempts for 320 yards but did not throw a touchdown and accounted for 2 interceptions. He rushed 135 times for 918 yards and 16 touchdowns over the last two seasons.

Toronto Argonauts

The Argos have some interesting choices to make with their quarterback room. Starter Chad Kelly returned from his suspension mid-season and didn’t play up to his MOP level expectations. Although Toronto still won games with him at the helm, and ultimately found themselves winning a Grey Cup it came after a gruesome injury to Kelly. Nick Arbuckle would start the big game and earn Grey Cup MOP.

Arbuckle, Cameron Dukes, and Bryan Scott are all free agents currently and an argument could be made to re-sign one or possibly all of these quarterbacks with the uncertainty surrounding Kelly’s rehab. Currently Kelly is the only quarterback under contract, while Scott is the only player who has not earned a start in the CFL as of yet. All three free agents could see interest from other teams, particularly Dukes who served as the short yardage option even when he was sent to the bench in favor of Arbuckle or Kelly. Scott has had his share of success in the US, but it has yet to translate to CFL playing time despite spending time on two teams last season.

Nick Arbuckle

Arbuckle’s performance in spot duty during the 2024 season under the watchful eye of quarterback whisperer and former mentor Ryan Dinwiddie worked wonders for his value on the open market. After being traded from his last three teams Arbuckle finds himself on the open market for the first time since 2021. Ironically once a package of the trade that sent the rights for Chad Kelly to Toronto, Arbuckle found himself starting in Kelly’s place in the biggest game of his long CFL career.

Since signing with Toronto for the first time in 2021 and later being traded to Edmonton, then Ottawa, and back to Toronto, Arbuckle has started 18 games while appearing in a total of 60 games. He has compiled 15 touchdowns to 27 interceptions while completing 499 of 754 passes or 66.1% for 5,708 yards during the regular season. While this stat line doesn’t impress me much (shout out to Michael Washington’s segment in our UFL podcast) his performance in the final game of the season against Edmonton did.

Dinwiddie crafted the perfect game plan for the veteran signal caller in what amounts to one of the best games of his CFL career. Arbuckle took his play to the next level after four seasons of less than stellar performances. He threw 32 passes completing 23 of them or 71.9%. He managed 378 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception.

Little did they know at the time this tune up game for Arbuckle ended up being a great decision. While the Grey Cup was not nearly as dominant as his 378 yard output against Edmonton, playing arguably the best defense in the CFL he did enough to help his team score 41 points, albeit with some help from all three phases of his team. At the end of the day, he put up a respectable 26 of 37 for 252 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions adding 2 carries for 11 yards. Pulling off an upset for the ages having gone into the game 9 1/2 point underdogs.

So far it has not amounted to any teams coming calling for his services, but his best case scenario might be keeping the seat warm for Chad Kelly until he returns from injury. Collecting a paycheck to hold a clipboard after he returns while getting a jump start on what ultimately could end up being a future in coaching. Maybe even right here in Toronto.

Cameron Dukes

Dukes is an interesting young player who got his start professionally playing for the Vegas Knighthawks of the Indoor Football League. Dukes is a dual-threat quarterback who came out of Lindsey Wilson showing off his abilities in one of the top indoor football leagues in the United States. The former NAIA champion found immediate success in the IFL and used it as a launchpad into the CFL.

Toronto spotted him after just one season playing for former CFL coach Mike Davis and signed him as a developmental prospect. They had such faith in him after some time as a backup Dukes was the man who stood in during the bulk of Chad Kelly’s suspension.

In 2023 Dukes played in all 18 games starting 2. Attempting 96 passes he completed 63 for 760 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. He rushed 35 times for 126 yards and 8 touchdowns. In 2024 he appeared in 18 games starting 9. He attempted 199 passes, completed 143 for 1,444 yards. He compiled 7 touchdowns and 6 interceptions, adding 57 carries for 321 yards and 4 more touchdowns.

Bryan Scott

Bryan Scott was once one of the most decorated Division 3 quarterbacks coming out of college. Playing in 33 games for Occidental College, he managed over 9,000 passing yards, 77 touchdowns to just 22 interceptions. He added 402 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. Knowing he was unlikely to find interest in the NFL draft, he signed with the BC Lions of the CFL after attending USC’s pro-day. He remained with BC for just 2 weeks before receiving some NFL interest from his hometown Los Angeles Rams following the draft.

Unfortunately, the try-out didn’t pan out in a contract offer and led him to pursue the next best opportunity which turned out to be The Spring League, a pay-to-play league meant to showcase players and help them find interest in the NFL or CFL. Having played well in the league, he found further interest in the CFL with Edmonton.

After a short stint with the Eskimos, he chose to sign a futures deal for the 2020 CFL season, only for the pandemic to derail most football leagues outside of the NFL for 2020. This led Scott to return to The Spring League where he was selected by The Generals led by well-known alternative football Head Coach Bart Andrus at the time. Scott beat out former NFL draft pick Zach Mettenberger and led the Generals to an undefeated season and a championship win. He added a TSL MVP award to his resume and became the only quarterback to throw for over 1,000 yards during the abbreviated 2020 TSL season.

In 2021 Scott earned a try-out with the Indianapolis Colts but again left without a contract offer leaving him a free agent. Ultimately heading into the 2022 season he was selected by Andrus again, this time the Head Coach of the USFL’s Philadelphia Stars. Scott played well before suffering an injury that would shut him down for the season. Knowing that there was a loophole in the original USFL contracts, Scott chose to pursue the XFL for the 2023 season. He was ultimately picked up by the Vegas Vipers who had also brought in Luis Perez, and Jalan McClendon. After a short competition, Scott was let go and the Vipers signed Brett Hundley who was rumored to be the highest paid quarterback in the XFL.

Ultimately after a couple months of sitting on the open market, he was signed by the Toronto Argonauts to compete for a roster spot with Cameron Dukes, and Ben Holmes, another former USFL quarterback. During the 2023 preseason Scott played well, going 16 of 21 for 147 yards and 1 touchdown. Toronto opted to keep him for the remainder of the season as the 3rd quarterback, with Dukes serving as the short yardage option and first off the bench. Returning in 2024, he was kept for the first 9 games of the season as depth behind Dukes once again. He would attempt 5 passes in week 4, completing all 5 for 79 yards and 1 touchdown. Many thought this would be enough to earn him a start at some point but instead he was released following the return of Chad Kelly.

He would spend a brief stint with the Blue Bombers practice roster before being let go just about two weeks later. This would lead him back to the Argonauts in Mid-November after Kelly suffered an injury. This also meant Scott was a part of another Championship winning team when the Argos brought home the Grey Cup. Scott is now an impending free agent, and it remains to be seen if he ends up signing with another CFL team or finding his way back into the US’s main spring football league, the UFL.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers had an interesting run in the 2024 season. After initially looking like the dynasty in Winnipeg was coming to a close following a stretch of losing, the Blue Bombers found their way back to the Grey Cup once again, this advanced what was already a record 28 Grey Cup appearances at the time. This was their fifth straight Grey Cup appearance, and it pitted them against the Toronto Argonauts who they had played and lost to in the 2022 Grey Cup. During the season one of the main questions about the Blue Bombers became the performance of Zach Collaros who celebrated his 36th birthday during the 2024 season.

Collaros, long the engine that propelled the Blue Bombers to year-in and year-out success had seemingly come back down to earth during the 2024 season. Finishing the season by matching a career-high in interceptions, while also notching his lowest touchdown total since taking over as the starter in Winnipeg some began to wonder if Collaros would see the bench at some point. While he did end up missing a game it was due more so to injury than it was his less than MOP level play. In came Chris Streveler, a dual-threat quarterback who had been used as the short yard option during his return to the Blue Bombers following a stint in the NFL with the Cardinals, Ravens, Dolphins and Jets.

Chris Streveler

Streveler was brought back to Winnipeg to much fanfare as he had grown a cult-like following in some circles due to his stint in the NFL. Having spent two seasons with the Blue Bombers prior to finding his NFL interest, there was little question where Streveler would play in the CFL if he did return in 2024. Having initially appeared in 35 games starting a total of 12 before Collaros was signed, Streveler had compiled 374 passing attempts, 242 completions for 2,698 yards, 19 touchdowns to 19 interceptions. A lot of his value was seen in the run game where he produced 205 carries for 1,174 yards and 22 touchdowns.

After the 2019 season he had scheduled workouts with three NFL teams, Tampa Bay, Arizona, and Miami. Ultimately, he was signed by the Arizona Cardinals just in time to find out the 2020 CFL season would be cancelled, making his timing even better. He remained with Arizona for the entire 2020 season and returned in 2021 before being released in late November. He had appeared in 7 games for the Cardinals completing 17 of 25 passes for 141 yards 1 touchdown to 1 interception. He added 7 carries for 21 yards.

Following his release, he was signed by the Baltimore Ravens that featured an offense that suited Streveler’s dual-threat abilities well. He remained on their practice squad for the rest of the season but did not appear in a game. Heading into the 2022 season he signed with the Miami Dolphins, another of the initial teams, to show interest in him. However, Miami chose to waive Streveler before they got to training camp. During training camp, the Jets opted to sign him, During the 2022 preseason he had an impressive performance managing 24 of 33 for 277 yards, 5 touchdowns, to just 1 interception. He added 9 rushing attempts for 71 yards as the Jets went undefeated in the preseason. Ultimately the Jets still placed him on their practice squad.

He was called up for three games; week 8, 16, and 17. In week 16 he got his first regular-season action for the Jets when he went 10 of 15 for 90 yards, adding 9 carries for 54 yards. Despite all this Streveler chose to sign a futures deal with the Jets for the 2023 season. He appeared in 1 preseason game and had arguably his worst performance as an NFL QB. Completing just 1 of 7 pass attempts for 9 yards including 1 interception. He rushed 1 time for 7 yards.

After the game it was later announced he had suffered a hand injury which led the Jets to place him on the injured/waived list. He went unclaimed and reverted back to the injured reserve for New York before they later reached an injury settlement resulting in his release. Streveler would later work out with the 49ers during the 2023 season but left without a contract.

After sitting out the entire 2023 NFL and CFL season, Streveler opted to return to where it all began for him signing a One year contract with the Blue Bombers in January of 2024. Serving as the top back-up and short yardage option behind Collaros, he appeared in 13 games before suffering a season ending injury. He also started 1 game along the way. During that time, he managed 52 pass attempts, 31 completions for 343 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He finished the season as the second leading rusher on the team with 87 carries for 272 yards and 10 touchdowns. Meaning he has scored double digit touchdowns every year of his CFL career.

At 29 years old, Streveler is still a valuable short-yardage option, and capable back-up quarterback at worst. At best he is a bridge quarterback for a team trying to break in a young quarterback. However, at this point in his career, it remains to be seen if he receives an offer worth his while to leave Winnipeg. Something I would not rule out, is his desire to try and find his way back into the NFL by pursuing a potential UFL contract offer if it came with the caveat of serving as the starter for the spring league, allowing him to then sign with an NFL team in time for training camp. Afterall 2025 could be the last year he has any real chance at making it back into the NFL, before resigning himself to sticking in the CFL as a short yardage option or retiring.

Saskatchewan Roughriders

The Roughriders have already made two notable moves this offseason at quarterback, however neither of these close the door on a return for their only free agent at the position, Shea Patterson. Trevor Harris, their aging starter, was signed to a one-year contract extension, however Harris has a long injury history that means the team needed to bring in or retain depth behind him. That is where their trade for former Stampeders starter Jake Maier came into play. Acquiring Maier meant they now have a very experienced and capable back-up quarterback who has played very well for brief stretches but left questions as the long-term answer for Calgary.

However, neither of these players is the dual threat running quarterback that Patterson is, and this could present Saskatchewan with a unique opportunity to have a quarterback room built with three players that started and won CFL games during the 2024 season. For a team that overachieved under first-year Head Coach Cory Mace, this would not be the worst scenario to watch unfold for the talented football team.

The question is, do they retain Patterson, or move in a different direction with younger, less experienced players already on the roster in former XFL quarterback Jack Coan or Michael Hiers who attended Rookie minicamp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024? Hiers, Coan, or Patterson could also pique the curiosity of UFL teams looking to bring in quarterbacks. A Hiers return to his hometown of Birmingham would make for some intriguing storylines for the Stallions who will essentially be looking to rebuild their room from scratch.

Shea Patterson

Shea Patterson is an interesting player who has had experience on NFL, USFL, TSL, CFL, and MLB rosters since 2018. Yes, you read that right, Patterson is one of the rare quarterbacks who was a two sport athlete in high school that was good enough to be selected in the MLB draft in 2018. Selected in the 39th round by the Texas Rangers he would have just fulfilled the 6 year obligations of his MLB contract following the 2024 offseason. His contract allowed him to finish out his college career without playing in any minor league baseball games. He spent time in spring training with the minor league affiliate of the Rangers before attending spring practice for Michigan in 2018 and 2019.

Prior to being selected by the Rangers he spent time at Ole Miss where he was actually Chad Kelly’s back-up initially. He later took on the starting role after an injury to Kelly, his back-up was another spring football staple Jordan Ta’amu best known for his time with the St. Louis Battlehawks, and DC Defenders of the XFL. Patterson would go undrafted in 2020 following a college career that saw him compile 9,276 all-purpose yards, and 76 touchdowns to just 27 interceptions. He would sign with the Kansas City Chiefs where he would briefly reunite with Ta’amu.

Waived early in camp he would then spend time with The TSL Blues coached by Ted Cottrell. This would lead him into the CFL for the first time signing with the BC Lions for the 2021 season where he spent time on the practice squad. He finished the 2021 season with Montreal playing in a handful of games as the short yardage option after injuries ravaged their depth. He would collect 11 carries for 18 yards in the season. After the 2021 season was completed, he opted to take his chances in the 2022 re-boot of the USFL where he was ultimately selected by the Michigan Panthers led by Jeff Fisher.

He would end up released just before week 7 after which he was claimed by the New Orleans Breakers by the end of the 2022 season. He had managed 106 completions on 176 attempts for 1,020 yards, 4 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He added 37 carries for 176 yards and 2 touchdowns. After the 2022 season did not pan out how he had hoped, Patterson decided to return to the CFL, this time with Saskatchewan.

He has been with Saskatchewan for two seasons serving primarily as the short yardage option. He has now suited up for 31 total games and in 2024 he started 7 games he appeared in putting up what was his best year as a professional. In two seasons he has 134 completions on 222 attempts for 1,681 passing yards, 6 touchdowns to 5 interceptions adding 53 carries for 173 yards and 9 touchdowns.

He heads into free agency with starts in multiple leagues, having shown he can serve in multiple roles in the CFL. He could certainly return to the CFL, but if the right offer came in the UFL I could see him pursuing his options down south knowing at just 27 years old he could still have a shot at landing an NFL opportunity after watching multiple quarterbacks sign NFL contracts after the 2024 UFL season.  One thing is for sure, Patterson will find his way on a professional roster in 2025, even if it means playing baseball.

Calgary Stampeders

As mentioned before, with every stone cast into the pond of quarterbacks, ripples are felt across the league. Calgary is likely one of the best examples of the ripples that will carry throughout their roster. With their entire quarterback room headed to free agency in 2025, the Stampeders made three very key moves solidifying and clarifying their quarterback room for 2025. The first move was to re-sign Pj Walker to an incentive laden contract extension based largely on playing time. This gave them a capable quarterback to compete with any player they brought in after him. Then they swung for the fences.

They would later strike what could be a franchise altering trade acquiring Vernon Adams who was playing at an MOP level before an injury, and the re-signing of Nathan Rourke by the BC Lions. Acquiring Adams meant they likely had their starter, and top back-up locked up for the 2025 season. This left former starter Jake Maier a loose end as an impending free agent, one that needed to be tied up to further clarify their plans for 2025.

That’s when Saskatchewan saw an opportunity to acquire the rights to a back-up who could come in and shore up their quarterback depth behind Trevor Harris who signed an extension earlier this offseason. As of now this leaves Calgary with Adams and Walker locked up for the 2025 season, but questions behind them. Could they look to retain one or more of their own free agents for 2025, or is the logical choice at this point also the most obvious, which would be re-signing short yard specialist Tommy Stevens and moving forward with a younger option as their fourth quarterback on the practice roster?

Logan Bonner

Logan Bonner is still an inexperienced quarterback with a lot of upsides despite having turned 27 years old this season. He had a long college career, spending five seasons with Arkansas State before transferring to Utah State and playing two more seasons. He went undrafted in 2023 at the age of 25 and signed with Calgary as a rookie turning 26 during the season.

Bonner graduated from Arkansas State with a bachelor’s degree in sports management. Having redshirted in 2016 he didn’t see his first action until 2017 when he appeared in 4 games. Attempting 21 passes he completed just 9. He threw for 70 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. The following season he appeared in 5 games, this time throwing 32 passes completing 15. He threw 181 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. It wasn’t until 2019 that he saw his first starts.

Over the next two seasons he managed to play 15 games starting all of them with a 6-9 record. He had attempted 415 passes completing 247 passes for 2,915 yards, 28 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Adding his first and only rushing touchdown in 2019.

He followed his former coach to Utah State as a graduate student arriving on campus as the immediate starter. He would start 18 games over two seasons for Utah State before suffering a season-ending injury in 2022. In 2021 Bonner had a career season leading the Aggies to an 11-3 record while racking up career highs in completions, attempts, completion rate, passing yards, touchdowns, interceptions, carries, and rushing yards.

He would end the season with 263 completions, 429 attempts or 61.3%, for 3628 yards, 36 touchdowns to 12 interceptions, a 154.4 qb rating, and 69 carries, for 66 yards. His year in 2022 was not nearly as promising, finishing with 56.4% for 753 yards 6 touchdowns, to 8 interceptions.

After joining Calgary there were high hopes for the rookie long term. Starting the 2023 season on the practice roster Calgary chose to give him a red shirt season focused on other signal callers. In 2024 he was not expected to be the starter with Jake Maier still the incumbent, and veteran Matthew Shiltz signed as the backup. However, Bonner would end up starting one game and finish the season having thrown 50 passes.

He completed 29 for 378 yards but tossed 5 interceptions and no touchdowns. Not exactly the debut he or Calgary had hoped.

It remains to be seen where Bonner will end up, but his relative inexperience, poor performance in 2024, and age could work against him when finding a new home in 2025.

Matthew Shiltz

Shiltz is a guy who was nearly ready to give up on football altogether following college. He was undrafted in 2016 by the NFL, and he went into the working world until Montreal invited him to a minicamp a year later. This ended up launching what has now grown into a 7 season CFL career that saw him spend four seasons with Montreal over a five year span.

He would sign with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2022 after the Alouettes opted to release him before he hit free agency. He joined the Ti-Cats with a resume that included 5 starts in 50 appearances with the Alouettes. He had 1,866 passing yards, 8 touchdowns to 11 interceptions adding 50 carries for 313 yards and 2 touchdowns.

With Hamilton he started 6 games and suited up for 28. He collected 280 passing attempts, 193 completions, 2,491 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. He also had 51 carries for 312 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Following a two-year stint with the Ti-Cats he would sign with the Stampeders. Playing in 10 games and starting 2 of them as Jake Maier’s primary back-up. Completing 34 passes of 62 attempts for 438 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He added 14 carries for 133 yards and another rushing touchdown. Heading into his 8th season, Shiltz is 32 years old. He is one of the more accomplished quarterbacks now on the market after names like McLeod Bethel-Thompson, Cody Fajardo and more were snatched up before the market even really opened. Shiltz should find interest in free agency, but it will likely mean that he will be joining his fourth CFL team.

Tommy Stevens

If there is one quarterback that makes the most sense for a return to the Stamps, it is Stevens. Stevens is as interesting as they come for CFL quarterbacks. Having attended Penn State for four seasons he appeared in 22 games. He helped the team more as a jack-of-all-trades than he did as a quarterback. Attempting just 41 passes, while rushing 76 times, and catching 14 passes. He collected 872 all-purpose yards, 14 touchdowns and 1 interception. He would transfer to Mississippi State where he took over as the starting quarterback.

Playing in 9 games, all starts he attempted 161 passes completing 97 for 1,155 yards 11 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He added 83 carries for 381 yards and 4 touchdowns. He saw 1 target but did not catch a pass in 2019 but collected 2 tackles. The 6’5 237 pound quarterback was selected in the 7th round by the New Orleans Saints and nearly became Taysom Hill 2.0 for the Saints as he was moved to tight end and placed on the practice squad to develop at his new position. He was released by the Saints and signed with the Panthers to finish out the 2020 season.

He would later see time as a wildcat quarterback/tight end on 5 snaps in week 17. He collected 4 carries for 24 yards including 11 yards after contact with the Panthers. He would sign with the Giants for the 2021 preseason lasting around 1 week. After sitting out the 2021 season following his release by the Giants he signed with the Calgary Stampeders for the 2022 season. They knew exactly what role Stevens would fill for them in a league that utilizes a short yardage specialist at quarterback, Stevens is potentially the best fit they could have asked for.

Now weighing in at 6’5 257 pounds, he would go on to appear in the next 54 games straight. However, he has attempted just 20 passes in the CFL completing 11 for 82 yards and 1 touchdown. He has also collected 160 carries for 685 yards and 25 touchdowns. Stevens will likely have a role as a short yardage specialist in the CFL for as long as he wants it, but the question is if he will be much of anything else to a team. With Calgary, he doesn’t have to be, but if he desires a chance to be seen as more than a short yardage option at quarterback, he may need to find a new team to get that opportunity.

Stevens has spent his entire CFL career in Calgary, and I do not see him leaving the Stampeders unless they decide to move on. Rolling into the 2025 season with Vernon Adams, Pj Walker, and Tommy Stevens is not a bad way to turn the tides in Calgary. Perhaps Calgary could find more ways to use Stevens and help him increase his value for the Stampeders. Many teams use fullbacks in the CFL; however, Calgary is one team that does not roster one at this time. Perhaps Stevens could be used in this role, or see some time on special teams.
