Versatile, determined, and gritty are just a few of the words you may hear used to describe Lance DeSorbo on the field. Respectful, coachable, and humble are a few that might come up off of it. In short, DeSorbo is the kind of player coaches love to coach, and players love to play with.

What The Tape Says
On film, you’ll see a player who has solid play strength, and a relentless motor, at times fighting through double teams or running a ball carrier down on the perimeter. He isn’t the quickest, fastest, or strongest player out there but he is more than adequate in all three areas to be an asset to any defense.
His best traits might be his versatility and size. At 6’3 285 pounds he can play inside or outside depending on the scheme. In a 4-3 he would be right at home as a 3 technique, in a 3-4 playing as a 5 technique. In a “NASCAR” package he could even play 0 or 1 technique, and in run situations, I wouldn’t think twice about kicking him out to the 6 technique and letting him crash the edge. He is one of those players whose alignment will vary heavily situationally. If we are likening football to chess he is a queen on the board, able to move anywhere a coordinator sees fit to attack an opposing offense. An invaluable piece of a dangerous puzzle every team is trying to assemble.
College Career
Looking back at his college career you will see a player who initially played for small Palomar College. As a 6’3 218 pound freshman DeSorbo did not initially see the field much. He played in just one game late in the season, when he collected 4 tackles including 1 for a loss.
The small school may not have initially realized it, but DeSorbo’s playing was directly tied to their win-loss record. In 2021, They were 5-2 with him, and 1-3 without him. During that season he had two very productive games. In week 2 he produced 7 tackles, including 1.5 for a loss against Golden West. In week 7 against Chaffey College he put up a monster game with 12 tackles, including 3.5 for a loss and 1 loss, accounting for -18 yards. The 270-pound defensive lineman was just getting started.
After two seasons at the JUCO level and building himself up from 218 pounds to 275 pounds he received an offer to play for Wagner University. He would arrive as a junior in 2022 looking to make an impact at his new school. After starting slow he came on strong in October. He had his first multiple-tackle game on 10/15 against Merrimack.
This began a run where DeSorbo produced 2 or more tackles in 5 of 6 games to close out the season. After beginning the year with 2 tackles in four games, he finished with 15 tackles, 1.5 for a loss, and a forced fumble in his last 6 games of the year building momentum toward his senior season.
In 2023 he didn’t have the slow start he had previously dealt with for three seasons. He was thrown into the lineup right away. He would have a 3 tackle, 4 tackle, 1 pass deflection game in his first 3 games of the season. Over his next 8 games, he had the best stretch of his college career, turning up when it mattered most and becoming a leader on the field. He produced 22 tackles, 2.5 for a loss, .5 sacks, and 16 yards lost in the process. Not a bad way to close out your college career. Graduating at 279 pounds.
Showcases and Combines
After college, DeSorbo went on what could be likened to a tour of showcases. Participating in Wagner’s pro day, the American National Combine, and the UFL showcase. He was set to attend the National Scouting Combine but the timing didn’t work due to his pro day. During this stretch, he put up solid numbers:
Vertical 32
Broad 9’2
Triple broad 26.5
20 yard 2.96
10 yard 1.75
3 cone 7.63
Shuttle 4.7
225lbs 28 reps
Along the way, he received some advice to add weight and focus more on defensive tackle, which has led him to bulk up to 286 pounds while keeping a focus on retaining his speed and agility. DeSorbo has found his first professional opportunity signing with one of the longest-running and best known indoor football teams in the United States, the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League. Arizona has served as the stepping stone for players who made it outdoors in the past, with quarterback Drew Powell, and defensive back Kyree Woods both signing outdoor contracts in recent years.
