Hasan Rogers: They Call Him “Sauce”

Coming out of Richards High School in Chicago, Illinois Hasan Muhammad-Rogers, was a two-sport athlete wrestling and playing football. A star dual-threat quarterback, Hasan Rogers committed to Illinois State staying close to home to begin his college career. That’s when life took an unexpected turn. A short conversation with a stranger ended with Hasan Rogers taking a bullet and fighting for his life.

Indoor Football League

Hasan Rogers is a name that Indoor Football Fans should know by now. A rookie in 2024, Rogers played for the two teams that are now dormant; the Oklahoma Flying Aces, and the Duke City Gladiators. His time with the Flying Aces was short but he still managed 9 of 23 for 89 yards, 3 touchdowns, 25 carries for 153 yards adding 6 tackles, 2 kick returns for 39 yards all in just 2 appearances.

He really burst on the scene with Duke City, scoring 5 touchdowns in the first game he was inserted as quarterback. Despite playing in just 6 games in 2024, he led the league in yards per carry. He also scored 23 touchdowns with just 7 interceptions and compiled 1,031 yards.

This broke down to an average of 172 yards 4 touchdowns and just over 1 interception per game. He finished 11th among quarterbacks in yards from scrimmage per game. The thing about Rogers, and the main reason this article came about, is his versatility.

Rogers was the first player signed for the quarterback room in Tulsa, but late in the offseason former IFL MVP Tj Edwards was signed reuniting with his former Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator, Andre Coles. However, even though Coles had that connection with Edwards and knew he would take over at quarterback, Rogers is the prototypical quarterback two in the IFL. Let’s take a look at what makes him so unique in his versatility.

Hasan Rogers: Unique Skillset Can Be Utilized Everywhere

Hasan Rogers began his career with Illinois State seeing time at quarterback, wide receiver, and special teams. He would finish the season with 2 receptions for 15 yards, 1 punt return, and 2 special teams tackles.

The next season he added running back to his resume. He would collect 23 carries for 94 yards, 1 reception for 7 yards, attempt 2 passes and complete 1 for 7 yards, and add another punt return. After his sophomore season, he transferred to Lincoln University where he was used all over the field. He had a career year seeing time as a passer, runner, kick, punt returner, and safety.

In two seasons at Lincoln, he put up 1 pass attempt for 4 yards, ran 12 times for 27 yards, 3 receptions for 24 yards, 45 kick returns for 875 yards, and 17 punt returns for 105 yards, on top of playing a large role on defense. He would finish with 91 tackles, 5 passes deflected, and 1 interception.

After college, there was a short hiatus from being on a roster, but Hasan Rogers was never far from the game. Building a brand called Sauce University where he would coach youth camps and compete in one-on-one tournaments. His grind to be a better athlete never stopped and this eventually earned him an opportunity with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL listed as a DB.

Versatility is the Name of the Game

In indoor football, teams have smaller rosters and often times they will seek out versatile players to serve as the backup quarterback so they can aid the team in other areas. No one does it better than Rogers. Considering he is still listed as a quarterback, Rogers has yet to attempt a single pass in 2025.

That has not stopped him from compiling 289 total yards. He is third on the team in total yards behind only Tj Edwards, and Sheldon Augustine. Currently, Rogers is second on the team in rushing yards behind only Edwards, fourth on the team in receiving yards behind McClurge, Cole Blackman, and Sheldon Augustine, and second on the team in return yards behind only Augustine.

With McClurge leaving for the UFL, we have seen more of Rogers mixed in as a receiver. In the last two games, he has caught 5 receptions for 32 yards and 1 touchdown. He has also continued to be the top running back.

Coach Quotes

Offensive Coordinator Andre Coles had high praise for Rogers. “His value is tremendous to our organization. In a league where you can only dress 21 players, it’s vital to have a player who can play multiple positions and contribute to special teams. Hasan is our starting RB, backup QB, Strong Safety as well as our upback on kickoff and holder for extra points & field goals.”

Coach Marvin Jones had this to say about Rogers “They call him ‘Sauce’ special player that can play many positions on offense, defense & special teams, he’s a hard worker and leader and we are lucky to have him.”

High praise from a highly respected coach and former player. If anyone knows how important a player like this is to a team, it is Marvin Jones.

Future in Football

Hasan Rogers is 28 years old, and the reality is that his window of making it into the NFL, or even the UFL/CFL is closing quickly. However, it would not surprise me to see Rogers get the call as soon as next week. Rogers is one of those players whose value is not at any one position, although his days playing both ways might be over.

At 5’11 175 pounds, outdoors his best position is likely as a slot receiver, similar to another former IFL player who made it to the NFL, Kavontae Turpin. At 175 pounds, Rogers would still be to see some snaps as a runner, but his main value would be in open space as a receiver, return man, and special teams ace.
