Art Briles Redemption Arc
Art Briles was one of the most accomplished college Head Coaches of his time when a sexual assault scandal with the football program led the school to terminate his contract. Briles was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing, with multiple lawsuits directed at him dropped along the way. He even settled a wrongful termination lawsuit with the school for $15.1 million. None of it seemed to matter.
His reputation had been tarnished, prosecuted in a court of public opinion without the proof to charge him with a crime. Yet this has followed him for years leading him to have job offers rescinded and facing pressure to resign from others. Let’s hope this time he is allowed a second chance to do it right at the collegiate level.
Eastern New Mexico Wants to Win
Eastern New Mexico is a program trying to pick up the pieces after firing Head Coach Kelley Lee. Five straight losing seasons and a collective 18-37 record over that stretch have spelled the end of his time at the university. Knowing they needed to bring in a prominent coach to rebuild the program and draw attention in recruiting they swung for the fences with Briles.

Anyone thinking Briles has been out too long to find success may want to rethink that. Briles spent the 2018 season coaching professional American Football in Italy, before accepting a Head Coaching position at a High School in Texas where he spent two seasons. He would return to Italy in 2022. He was also set to be involved with the International Football Alliance in 2025 before issues led to a disruption in the season.
Briles holds a career record of 99-65 in college, a 17-5 record in Italy, and a 185-51-3 record in high school. He will take his collective 301-121-3 record a winning percentage of 70.8 to Eastern New Mexico, in a division that features two 10-win programs and a muddy middle of the pack ripe for a team to make a large leap in year one.
However, ENMU is not quite out of the woods yet. It would not be unprecedented for Art Briles to face and ultimately succumb to pressure to re-sign. Pressure that has already begun to be dished out by some college football fans who cannot look past the scandal.
