Jason Myers; Snubbed During Greatest Season by a Kicker Ever?

Jason Myers has been quietly going about his business in Seattle for years. Signed before the 2019 season, Myers was not regarded as an elite kicker like he is today. He was coming off some rough seasons early in his three seasons with the Jaguars, but had redeemed himself with a stellar season for the Jets in 2018. The Seahawks needed a kicker, and seeing him have a career year, decided to bet on the upward trajectory of Myers’ career continuing.

Stability Changes Everything for Jason Myers

After joining the Seahawks, it was like stability was all Myers needed to begin to find consistency in his kicking. Myers actually started his career playing very well for the Jaguars, converting 26 of 30 field goals in 2015. Then he seemed to fall off slightly. Over the next two seasons, he failed to convert 80% of his kicks. Converting 27 of 34 in 2016, and following it up with 11 of 15 in 6 games in 2017, or a cumulative 77%.

These struggles were not reserved for field goal attempts, as during his first three seasons, he missed 12 extra points. This is something that has followed him throughout his career; however, he has actually only converted 100% of his extra points twice in 11 seasons. Despite these struggles, Seattle saw enough in him to sign him and allow him to compete with 40-year old Sebastion Janikowski coming off a back injury.

Jason Myers would ultimately lose the battle with the Seahawks, actually being released in August of 2018. It would seem it did not take long for Seattle to realize they had made a mistake.

Crossroads for Both Parties

As mentioned before, Jason Myers would sign with the Jets and have a career season. He would convert 33 of 36 field goals and 30 of 33 extra point attempts, making his first Pro Bowl. He even set a team record, converting 7 field goals in a single game for the Jets.

While Myers was having a career season, Seattle had signed Sebastian Janikowski, coming off a lost season due to back issues that left him on injured reserve for the Raiders. Janikowski was 40 years old in 2018, and it showed at times. He finished the season 22 of 27 on field goals and 48 of 51 on extra points, but there was one moment that stuck out in 2018 for Seahawks fans, and it truly was not Janikowski’s fault, but it likely would have led to a change at kicker regardless.

Seattle’s offense stalled early in a drive against the Dallas Cowboys. Lined up on Dallas’ 49-yard line, Seattle opted to attempt a 57-yard field goal. Janikowski was always known for his leg strength and had hit from 60+ multiple times in his career. In fact, he had even converted a 56-yard field goal earlier in the season at 40 years old. However, when he attempted this kick in the playoffs, he missed it, and Seattle would go on to lose 22-24.

Playoff Loss Prompts Change

The Seahawks knew Janikowski was not going to be the long term answer at kicker, given he was already 40-years old, so the most likely scenario after 2018 was always a departure. Janikowski would end up retiring, sparing Seattle the potential of releasing him. This cleared the path for the return of Jason Myers in 2019, fresh off a Pro Bowl season.

This time, Seattle was not going to force him to compete; they handed him a 4-year $15.45 million contract. It was not always pretty for Myers with the Seahawks. In his first season, during a game against Tampa Bay, he missed two field goals, including one that would have been a game-winner. Ultimately, Seattle pulled out the overtime victory, but the performance still hung over Myers. He would later redeem himself, converting 2 field goals, including the game-winner at the end of regulation against division rival San Francisco.

While Seattle had signed Myers, hoping he would duplicate his 2018 season, he did not play as well as anyone had hoped. Converting 23 of 28 field goals and 40 of 44 field goals was never going to get him released one season into a 4-year contract, and Seattle was quickly rewarded for their faith in Jason Myers. In 2020, during a season in which nothing was consistent from year-to-year, Myers would have an unbelievable season, converting 49 of 53 extra points and all 24 of his field goal attempts. This actually made it 31 consecutive field goals made, breaking a team record.

At this point, Seattle knew they had their kicker; even one season of struggles would not derail his time with the Seahawks, and this was proven in 2021 when, immediately following the most accurate season of his career, he would produce the second-lowest field goal conversion rate of his career at 73.9%. Converting 17 of 23 attempts and 44 of 47 extra points.

One thing seems to be consistent throughout Myers’ career: every time he falls, he bounces back in a big way the following season. In 2022, he would lead the NFL in scoring and make the second Pro Bowl of his career. This came on the heels of converting 34 of 37 and 41 of 42 extra points. Scoring a combined 143 points on the season. On January 18th, 2023, Seattle signed Jason Myers to a 4-year $21.1 million extension, making him the second-highest-paid kicker in the league behind only Justin Tucker at the time.

Fast Forward to his Unforgettable 2025 Season

In 2025, Jason Myers took his game to the next level, and not only led the NFL in points scored, but he also set a league record for most with most points scored in a season by a single player with 206 points. He also set the regular season record for most points without a touchdown at 171. As if that was not enough, in the biggest game of his career, he went on to set a record for most successful field goals in a Super Bowl with 5, and converted all 7 of his kicks, scoring 17 points on the day.

He singlehandedly outscored New England on the day whose entire team had just 13 points. Jason Myers accounted for the first and last points scored by his team, and at one point, he was responsible for the only points they had scored through three quarters.

Jason Myers may have had the best case of any kicker in the history of the NFL to win Super Bowl MVP, but instead, his own franchise decided to give that award to Kenneth Walker. No one can take away from what Walker did during the game, and if not for his perfomance clearly Myers would not have been put in the position to be given 7 attempts to put points on the board. However, Jason Myers’ historic season has already begun to fade into memory.

While his records will stand in history until broken, I would be failing you as a reader if I did not point out that he missed out on all forms of recognition he could have been rewarded with for a record-setting season. Due to their trip to the Super Bowl, he had to pass on the Pro Bowl, then in the Super Bowl, he was passed over for Super Bowl MVP and Special Teams Player of the Year. By all accounts, he was not honored at all for his impressive season.

We can sit here and argue whether or not converting 60-yard field goals, or setting a league record for points scored by a kicker, matters more, but in my opinion, to snub Myers on every major award for a kicker after the season he had is not only asinine, it’s egregious.

Congratulations to Jason Myers on his amazing season.
