Welcome back CFL Fans! With Week 16 in the history books, we can now recalculate the Power Rankings heading into Week 17. The first game of the week between the Alouettes and Tiger Cats could see them vying for 5th in the PR’s.
CFL Week 17
The Toronto Argonauts are definitely looking to solidify a division clinch, while Ottawa still has a shot at 2nd in the standings. I expect the game of the week to be Lions vs Stampeders, competing for 2nd in the tough West Division. Let’s have a look at the Week 16 results and how they affect the Power Rankings for Week 17.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats @ Montreal Alouettes
The 4-9 Hamilton Tiger-Cats traveled to Montreal to take on the 5-7 Alouettes Friday night. This game bears significant importance in the East Division as they compete for 2nd place behind Toronto. This would be the third meeting of these teams, the previous games ending with a win each and decided by 5 points or fewer. The Tiger-Cats held a slight edge over the Alouettes until the end of the 3rd quarter, thanks in part to RB Wes Hills’ 61 yards rushing, and a TD in the 2nd. Montreal would rally in the 4th quarter with 11 points, taking the victory 23-16. The Alouettes get a boost to 4th, while the Tiger-Cats stay at 6th.

Toronto Argonauts @ Ottawa Redblacks
The 1st place Toronto Argonauts traveled to Ottawa to take on the 3-9 Redblacks for the 3rd time this year. The last two meetings were decided by one victory each, and a scoring differential of 42-37 in favor of the Redblacks. The outcome of this game could keep Ottawa in the chase for 2nd in the East, or solidify Toronto’s 1st place throne. Toronto dominated 45-15, QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson passed for 245 yards and a 3:1 TD to INT ratio. The Argo’s defense was equally impressive, intercepting Ottawa 5 times, 2 of which were returned for TD’s. With this big win, the Argonauts clinch a playoff birth, and a shot at a Grey Cup title. Toronto moves into 1st place in the PR’s, obviously the Blue Bombers have a better roster, but at this point in the season the Argos are a much more dangerous team.
Calgary Stampeders @ BC Lions
The battle for 2nd place in the West Division has been contested by two teams this season, the 9-3 Lions and the 8-5 Stampeders. The Lions hosted Calgary at BC Place Saturday night, will this settle the 2nd place divisional question? It could certainly affect the top 4 spots in the Power Rankings. The Stampeders pulled off a 25-11 win against the Lions, in a disappointing, slow paced affair. The CFL fans were geared up for a full-tilt shootout with these two juggernauts, but it was not to be. The Lions were less than impressive with only 10 offensive points, but did manage to clinch a playoff spot. I pulled the Stampeders from 1st to 2nd after this “relaxed” performance and the Lions drop to 5th. In the standings, BC still holds 2nd place and Calgary is 3rd, but with recent performances I can’t lift the Lions in the PR’s.
