The Las Vegas knighthawks of the Indoor football league have Signed former superstar running back Derrius Guice. Derrius was born on June 21, 1996 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and attended Catholic High School. During his high school career he was an All-State selection three times and led his team to two consecutive state championships.
After graduating from high school he committed to play college football at Louisiana State University (LSU). To Say Derrius’s career was anything but great is an understatement. While at LSU Guice had an elite collegiate career as one of their top running backs ever. In 2016 he became the first freshman in LSU history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season and set several records including most rushing yards by any freshman with 1,387 total yards on 183 carries along with 15 touchdowns which earned him SEC Freshman Offensive Player Of The Year honors that same year.
During his junior year at LSU Derrius recorded 1172 rushing yards while averaging 7.6 per carry along with 11 touchdowns earning him First Team All-SEC honors from both coaches & media outlets alike. He became the first SEC player in history to rush for 250 yards or more on three separate occasions. He joined Greatness such as Herschel Walker achieving that Feat.
In 2018 Derrius declared early for the NFL draft where he ended up being selected by the Washington Redskins as the 59th overall pick during the 2nd round of the draft process. He was projected to be a Top 10 pick but due to some non football related incidents he slipped down draft boards.
Guice missed his rookie season after suffering a torn ACL in the preseason opener in 2018 against the New England Patriots. Despite suffering multiple injuries throughout the 2019 season he made impactful contributions leading the team’s backfield racking up 591 total all purpose yardage & 4 touchdown receptions throughout 16 games played.
His tough style combined with great vision makes him a valuable asset within an organization that has been searching for a franchise Half back since Alfred Morris left. However things would become worse for Guice off the field which ultimately led to him being released.
On April 12th 2022 Derrius attended The HUB football camp. This is a Camp for elite Free agents looking to get pro looks whether it be Cfl, Arena Or even NFL opportunities. HUB leadership were very impressed with what they saw from Derrius quote “Derrius came in with a great attitude and a lot of energy. He was engaging with other players and the coaches and demonstrated that he can catch the ball well out of the backfield.” – HUB Football General Manager Mike Williams at April workout.
This sentiment can be echoed through his camp numbers where he clocked in at a 4.4 forty yard dash and 31.5 vertical; these numbers are verified by NFL scouting. When asked how he has managed to stay in shape he said, “I’ve been working out in Louisiana with my boy Brad. He’s been getting me ready, lots of weight training, speed training, conditioning, just trying to get everything going, see where I am mentally, physically I haven’t been in it for a while but I’m still feeling pretty good.”
From the looks of it Derrius is ready to attack his next opportunity with the Vegas Knighthawks. Coach Mike Davis of the said “I do all the recruiting for us. Knew him through some players. Talked about it last season but never pushed it because the timing wasn’t right and now it is.” After three years away from the game Guice returns. This begs the question can this be his ticket back to Glory? We will get our first look at the comeback story on March 25th.
