Welcome back USFL Fans! The 2022 season is behind us, and it’s time to calculate the USFL Predictions for Week 2 of the 2023 season. @TheBrysh Power Rankings (PR’s) are calculated using a proprietary algorithm, @TheBrysh Power Rankings are also used to calculate weekly predictions. Last year’s predictions for @TheBrysh were 26/40, for a season total of 65% on straight up wins. As the weeks progress, the numbers get dialled in and the predictions become even more accurate. Point spreads are courtesy of The USFL Newsroom and are accurate at the time of writing.
WEEK 1 POWER RANKINGS
Week 1 of any Spring Football season is always the most difficult to handicap, due mainly to 9 months of inactivity, massive changes in rosters and coaching staff, and even changes in venues. Mainly relying on the previous season’s statistics and performances, @TheBrysh has calculated the multiplex, advanced metrics for this year’s algorithm. This season’s Week 1 Power Rankings are purely the result of mathematical, objective analysis with no room for subjective opinions:

SATURDAY GAMES
New Jersey Generals @ Birmingham Stallions(-5.5) Head Coach Skip Holtz, and his Stallions, will host Mike Reily, and his Generals, in their first game of the 2023 USFL season at Protective Stadium. The Generals may have lost some offensive potential in the off season, but should be more than tough defensively. The Stallions are last year’s champions, and this year both they and the Generals are +300 odds to win the USFL Crown. @TheBrysh is going with the preceding Champs to eke out a close win, Stallions 22-20.

Philadelphia Stars(-2.5) @ Memphis Showboats The Philadelphia Stars are returning from a surprising finish to their 2022 season that saw them climb to the pinnacle of the playoffs, only to be defeated by the Stallions. Todd Haley HC’s the newest edition to the USFL as the Showboats replace the TB Bandits, not much is known about this team. Given that Philadelphia will have star QB Case Cookus in their line up, @TheBrysh predicts a Stars 25-21 win.

SUNDAY GAMES
Michigan Panthers @ Houston Gamblers(-1.5) HC Curtis Johnson takes the helm for the Gamblers this year, and will be placing plenty of expectation on RB Mark Thompson to lead his offence. Michigan had a disappointing 2022 season(2-8), HC Mike Nolan will be leaning heavily on LB Frank Ginda to hold back the Gamblers. Houston should get a placebo “Home Team” effect (the game is in Memphis), and take the win 24-21 over the Panthers.

Pittsburgh Maulers @ New Orleans Breakers(-3.5) The Maulers overhauled their look for 2023, ditching the horrid purple to go with Steelers’ black and gold. Hopefully Pittsburgh overhauled their offence and defence as well, they were embarrassing in 2022. New Orleans is returning from a playoff berth last year, where they were led by DL Reggie Howard Jr and the toughest defence in the league. HC John DeFillipo and CFL star QB should make easy work of the Maulers in a Breakers 25-11 blowout victory.
