Dallas Reins is your Prototypical offensive linemen for the modern era. Standing 6 foot 7 322 pounds, he’s got experience playing both guard and tackle, and he plays the blindside which can be one of the most difficult positions to fill on any football team.
Having just completed his rookie year with the Indoor Football League’s Tucson Sugar Skulls led by offensive minded head coach Hurtis Chinn, and protected one of the best quarterbacks in the league in Ramone Atkins.
Background
Coming out of Elizabeth High School located Southeast of Denver, he was a three sport athlete. Playing football, wrestling, and running track. He would be named All-State all four years. He also helped lead his team to the state title while playing both ways for his school also seeing time at Defensive Line. (Keep that in mind AFL/NAL coaches)
This gives you an idea what kind of athlete he is but only really lays the framework for the full picture of his athletic profile. He ran a 5.5 40 yard dash and put up 15 reps on the bench at the Texas A&M Commerce Pro-Day in 2022. He has 34 1/8 inch arms, and a wing span of 79 inches.
At the XFL combine he doubled down on this performance. He produced a 1.8 10-yard split, and a 3.03 20-yard split, as well as an 8.1 3-cone drill. For context this is standing 2 inches and roughly 10 pounds heavier than your average offensive linemen. Reins is at worst an NFL caliber athlete, with his only questions being strength of competition in college and the IFL, but let’s remember Reins faced former high NFL Draft picks like Malik McDowell and Robert Nkemdiche, as well as the top pass rushers in the league like Undraez Lilly who has 15 sacks and 27 tackles for a loss in two seasons.
College Career
Between his time at Merced College, and his time at Midwestern State University he played in over 35 games with more than 24 starts. He was named First-Team All Golden Coast both seasons at Merced. In 2019 and 2021 his unit helped pave the way for an average of 125 yards and 149.9 yards respectively. He also helped lead his team to the Breath Bowl
Professional Career Starts with a Playoff Run
During the 2022 season the Tucson Sugar Skulls managed a 9-8 record with a 9-5 record in conference. After this season the Sugar Skulls changed head coaches, and watched their quarterback sign a USFL deal only to be released and signed by Vegas, having been replaced by Ramone Atkins formerly the Rookie of the Year in 2022.
With all the turnover at these positions it was sure to breed more changes elsewhere. Allowing 21 sacks and a loss of 134 yards didn’t help that case. With this turnover the team found a gem in Reins. With a rebuilt offensive line, Tucson allowed 2 less sacks, and averaged over 20 more yards per game rushing over last season despite the same running back and offensive scheme given that new head coach Hurtis Chinn was previously the offensive coordinator.
This wasn’t the only improvement either as the team saw more first downs in 2023 producing 285 to the 248 we saw a year ago, nearly 300 more rushing yards, they cut out nearly half the penalty’s and yards they were faced with last year, and managed more third down and fourth down conversions than last season. Also last season DaQuan Neal and Mike Jones combined for 1,135 rushing yards, this season Atkins and Jones combined for 1,410 yards. Benjamin Jones also went from 67 yards to 237 yards as the third leading rusher on the team in back-to-back years.
Dallas has already watched one of his teammates get the call from the XFL in Fernando Frye. Is he next on the XFL’s list for free agent offensive linemen or does he ultimately see interest from the CFL, or USFL?
