The Los Angeles Lakers had been playing great basketball before their blowout loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. In that loss, the Lakers suffered another huge blow when star player Luka Doncic went down with a hamstring injury. On Friday, it was announced that Doncic suffered a grade 2 hamstring strain and would miss the remainder of the season. His status is also uncertain for when the playoffs begin. Recovery time for the injury is usually 3-6 weeks, a tough break for the Lakers heading into the playoffs.

Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic has been playing some of the best basketball of his life this season with the Lakers. Playing in 64 games he averaged 35.8 minutes the third most of his career. He also has managed 33.5 points per game the second highest number of his career, while shooting 47.6%, 36.6% from 3, and 78% on free throws. All while averaging 7.7 rebounds per game, 8.3 assists, 1.6 steals, and half a block.
This will be no small role for the Lakers to replace, and Luka Doncic is arguably the focal point of this team in 2026. Can an aging LeBron, and his supporting cast manage to keep the Lakers competitive during Luka Doncic’s absence?
LeBron James

When Luka Doncic was healthy, LeBron James was the team’s third option; now that Luka Doncic is out, James’ role will be much more. The Lakers will once again rely on LeBron to control the offense, create scoring opportunities for teammates, and take over games when needed. His ability to read defenses and dictate tempo will be critical as the Lakers adjust to life without their star guard. James will likely see an increase in both scoring and playmaking duties, especially in late-game situations.
Austin Reaves

Austin Reaves, who has had a good season, must step up even more now. Luka Doncic’s absence pushes him into a much larger role. The Lakers will need Reaves to take on more ball-handling responsibilities and serve as a secondary playmaker alongside James. If he can consistently provide scoring in the 25–28 point range while facilitating the offense, it would significantly help offset the loss of Luka Doncic’ s production.
DeAndre Ayton

DeAndre Ayton has been playing better of late; now he has to play even better. Ayton could receive more touches in the paint to help shoulder the load with Doncici being out. They must involve him more in the pick-and-roll and feed him the ball in the paint to create easier scoring opportunities. Ayton’s rebounding and interior presence can also help the Lakers control the pace of games.
Final Thoughts on the Lakers Without Luka Doncic
Replacing Luka Doncic will take a collective from, everybody. While no single player can replicate what he brings to the court, strong performances from James, Reaves, and Ayton could help keep the Lakers afloat until their superstar returns. If those players rise to the challenge, the Lakers can remain a dangerous team in the Western Conference.
