CFL WEEK 1 EXPERT PREDICTIONS

Welcome back CFL Fans! The 2023 pre-season is behind us, and it’s time to calculate the CFL Predictions for Week 1. @TheBrysh Power Rankings (PR’s) are calculated using a proprietary algorithm, @TheBrysh Power Rankings are also used to calculate weekly predictions. 2022 predictions for @TheBrysh were an impressive 60/86, for a season total 69.8% on straight up wins. As the weeks progress, the numbers get dialled in and the predictions become ever more accurate. Point spreads are courtesy of oddshark.com and are accurate at the time of writing.

PRE-SEASON: RECAP

@TheBrysh has never been a fan of pre-season football and have rarely tuned in for several clear-cut reasons, including meaningless outcomes. Teams fielding a roster filled with hopefuls that will be suiting up in Wroclaw, Poland, in 3 weeks is not exactly what a devout fan of the CFL wants to spend Saturday night watching. In addition, these games lead to needless risk of injury, false hopes created for undefeated teams (Roughriders), and desperation fastened unnecessarily to the winless. That being said, @TheBrysh Expert Power Rankings are the same before AND after the results of the pre-season.

Predictions of all CFL games this week as well as power rankings, recaps, summary of the previous week's action and graphics

THURSDAY GAME

BC Lions @ Calgary Stampeders(-3.5) The Stampeders are hosting the Lions in the season opener at McMahon Stadium, and Calgary’s offence promises to impress. With the league’s leading rusher in RB Ka’Deem Carey, and QB Jake Maier at the helm, the Lions have their work cut out for them. With their star quarterback defected to the NFL, BC is sure to have growing pains trying to find offensive chemistry, I’ll take the Stampeders 29-26.

FRIDAY GAME

Hamilton Tiger-Cats @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers(-4.5) Grey Cup 2022 was a big disappointment for the season-long favourite Bombers, but they are still the 2023 odds on choice to take the crown. Hamilton has signed up former MVP QB Bo Levi Mitchell, but he is not the consistent performer that he once was. @TheBrysh predicts that this will be the blowout game of the week, with the Blue Bombers spanking the ‘Cats 33-17.

SATURDAY GAME

Ottawa Redblacks @ Montreal Alouettes(-1.5) A horrible outing in 2022 left the Redblacks with a 4-14 record, a plus-minus of nearly -100, and not much potential for 2023. Montreal promises another humdrum display of mediocre talent, unless former ‘Riders QB Cody Fajardo can provide a spark. Destined to be the unstimulating matchup of Week 1, an Alouettes win 28-22 seems likely.

SUNDAY GAME

Saskatchewan Roughriders(-3.5) @ Edmonton Elks A home field winless streak dating back to the 2019 season is not the most encouraging statistic for the Elks in Week 1. The big question for the ‘Riders this season is how the team will perform offensively with QB Trevor Harris replacing Cody Fajardo. Saskatchewan still has some defensive potential, like LB Larry Dean, and should be able to control the Elks in an easy 30-21 victory on the road.
