Ranking the Indoor Football League Quarterback Rooms Part 1

A lot has been made about the quarterbacks leaving the Indoor Football League to jump to the Arena Football League for the 2024 season. Enticed by the increased emphasis on passing, and the potential to make more money in the short term. With the Indoor Football League Season upon us what better time to take a look at the quarterback rooms around the league?

With players like Drew Powell, Ramone Atkins, Charles McCullum, Jonathan Bane, and Andre Sale, all jumping to the AFL, some have said the IFL would see a drop-off in talent at the quarterback position. I strongly disagree. I would go one step further, and say that the IFL might be on the verge of one of their best seasons, in terms of quarterback talent, that we’ve seen in a very long time.

Influx of Talent a Yearly Occurrence in the IFL

As of late recent XFL/USFL quarterbacks have signed contracts with Massachusetts, Bay Area, Frisco, Tucson, and Tulsa. The dynamic duo of Ja’Rome Johnson and Max Meylor split up and we will see Johnson wearing the Crimson, Black, and Gold of the Vegas Knighthawks. Sam Castranova the top NAL quarterback in recent years followed his former coach, Tom Menas, and the San Antonio Gunslingers to the IFL. The Jacksonville Sharks imported their up-and-coming young quarterback Connor Blount, one of the top young players in any indoor league.

Duke City had an interesting competition on its hands with five different players who COULD start or get cut. Iowa gets one of the top quarterbacks in 2022, Darius-James Peterson back from injury. Arizona added Dalton Sneed in free agency fresh off of a championship win. San Diego returns Nate Davis, a man whom I have on several occasions called the Peyton Manning of the Indoor Football League due to his knowledge of the game, pre-snap reads, and ability to stay one step ahead of the opposing defense.

NAZ will have a new quarterback for the fourth season in a row truly embracing the developmental league aspect of the IFL. Quad City is trying to set themselves up for a future after Ej Hilliard, and it looks like they’ve brought in three young players Asher O’Hara, Judd Erickson, and Mike Irwin, all of whom look to be promising prospects. Meanwhile, a former CFL Quarterback with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers looks to replace Lorenzo Brown in Sioux Falls, but he could have a competition on his hands. With all these names and so many more to weigh, there was a lot to think about when ranking these rooms.

I wanted to rank the 16 quarterback rooms in the IFL before the 2024 season. However, this is just my opinion and we want to hear your thoughts in the comments below. We will start at sixteen and work our way down to one. Without further ado..

Sixteen: Northern Arizona Wranglers

Currently, the Wranglers are slated to head into their fourth straight season with a different starting quarterback. Joshua Jones and Dillon Sterling-Cole will compete for the job this season under Les Moss. Heading into the fourth season of the franchise, Coach Moss is looking to catch lightning in a bottle in one of these unproven IFL players, much like he did in 2022 with Kaleb Barker.

Joshua Jones

A product of UNC Pembroke Jones was a five-year starter for the program from 2018-2022. He would leave the program with just over 10,000 yards passing and fell just shy of 500 rushing yards. Where Jones’s running ability seemed to come into play the most was near the goal line which he crossed 17 times as a runner.

He completed 60% of his 1,538 attempts and managed 70 touchdowns to 34 interceptions. At 6’1 225 pounds Jones is built a lot like a running back, which is part of his success in the Redzone. Running a 4.82 won’t blow anyone away, but it’s more than enough to keep a drive moving when it counts. He has all the passing ability to be a quality quarterback but one has to wonder if Sterling-Cole isn’t overall the better athlete.

Dillon Sterling-Cole

Sterling-Cole should turn some heads in the Arizona area for astute college football fans. A one-time Sun Devil, the 6’3 223 pound signal caller looks like he could line up as a wide receiver, running back, or even a linebacker. This should prove to be an asset in the IFL where he will be asked to run early and often, perhaps we even see a situation where even if Sterling-Cole doesn’t start he becomes a change-of-pace quarterback for NAZ.

While at ASU he didn’t play much and ultimately transferred out after four years. He would attend Midwestern State for his final two years of college. Playing in 18 games, he collected 11 200-yard games, totaling 3,478 yards, 29 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He added 109 carries and 5 touchdowns. He would win LSC Offensive Player of the Year, and LSC Newcomer of the Year in 2021. He now looks to beat out Jones to be the starting quarterback less than a two-hour drive from where he spent four years in college.

Fifteen: Tucson Sugar Skulls

The Tucson Sugar Skulls have seen a tremendous amount of turnover as of late. They swung a trade to bring in a big-name IFL quarterback Drew Powell only to watch him sign with the Orlando Predators of the AFL. However, due to the UFL dispersal draft a rather talented option became available at the right time, and Geremy Hickbottom found a soft landing spot after being left out of the newly formed league.

Geremy Hickbottom

Geremy Hickbottom was with the Massachusetts Pirates in 2023 for a brief stretch. Brought in to backup Anthony Russo a former XFL quarterback, It was Hickbottom who got the call-up. DC needed a quarterback for the stretch run, with some uncertainty surrounding their third quarterback Eric Dungey. Hickbottom wouldn’t see any time on the field for DC, however, he finished out the year working with Shannon Harris a longtime quarterback coach and offensive coordinator at the college level.

Harris and Hickbottom narrowly missed meeting at Tennessee State where Hickbottom finished his college career in 2021. Harris was the offensive coordinator in 2020. The 6’4 210 210-pound signal caller spent four seasons at Grambling before transferring. He played in 35 total games attempting 875 passes completing 508 or 57.7%. He managed 6,049 yards or 6.91 yards per attempt. He added 367 carries for 1,594 yards, and 23 touchdowns.

Originally Hickbottom was signed to the Cologne Crocodiles of the German Football League but he opted to instead stay in the US and sign with Mass due to the expected birth of a child. This proved to be the right decision as the XFL would come calling. Hickbottom had spoken to several teams, in multiple leagues before ultimately deciding to sign with Tucson.

Mylik Mitchell

Mylik Mitchell is a 2024 draft-eligible player who has decided to take his fate into his own hands and put himself in a position to potentially play professional football before he ever lands on an NFL, CFL, or UFL roster. Believe me a team in one of those leagues will take notice, and don’t be surprised if it’s the CFL.

At 6’4 212 pounds Mitchell completed over 62% of his passes over his last three seasons at Ferris State. He carried a 3:1 touchdown to interception ratio and racked up 4,218 passing yards. He also showed the ability to run the ball well, with 522 yards and 10 touchdowns. One concern that should be mentioned is his 18 fumbles, although he only ever lost 4.

He started his career at Kent State where he redshirted in 2015, and played in 4 games in 2016, before suffering a season-ending injury and missing the 2017 season due to injury as well. In his four games with the school, he completed 39 of 69 passes for 363 yards 5 touchdowns, and 1 interception. He added 87 rushing yards.

Mitchell had this to say about joining Tucson “I’m just eager to keep winning in my career and life. I’m ready and prepared to bring that energy to the Sugar Skulls.“ Sounds like the mentality of a leader to me.

Neiko Hollins

Hollins is a 6’4 215 pound quarterback who began his college career at Prairie View University in 2016 redshirting but still appearing in two games before stepping into a prominent role in 2017. He went on to complete 134 of 247 passes for 1,853 yards 21 touchdowns and 8 interceptions with a long of 88 yards on the year. Hollins isn’t your typical run-first IFL quarterback with just 12 carries in his first 12 games.

Fast forward to 2021 and he joined Midwestern University playing two more seasons. He played in 16 games with 153 pass attempts, and 75 completions, collecting 8 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He added 59 yards rushing and 1 touchdown on 26 attempts. Ironically Hollins once started in front of Jalen Morton who could be on IFL radars after being released by the Birmingham Stallions where he won a USFL Championship in 2023. Could we see Hollins pop on UFL radars after time in the IFL?

Dark Horse: Torrance Gibson

Gibson had an interesting college career committing to Ohio State as a quarterback suffering an injury then moving to wide receiver. He then went to Mississippi Gulf Coast where he played quarterback once again, while also catching 3 passes. He would graduate after the 2017 season and sign with the Edmonton Eskimos. Gibson has attempted on several occasions while in college to move back to quarterback.

Torrance Gibson is not a newcomer to the IFL, the 6’5 225 pound athlete played wide receiver and special teams for the Spokane Shock in 2021 catching 11 passes for 92 yards and 1 touchdown while logging 7 tackles. While Gibson hasn’t played the position in a while, he still has the ability to play quarterback in a league where athleticism might count more at the quarterback position than it does in most.

Fourteen: Duke City Gladiators

The Duke City Gladiators as of right now have four players signed that could compete for their quarterback position. Beginning with indoor football veteran Tasleem Wilson who spent the 2023 season with the Sioux City Bandits of the CIF. Also signed were Javin Kilgo, Jayru Campbell, and Devond Blair.

Tasleem “Taz” Wilson

Wilson did not have the greatest season with the Bandits last season but he has IFL experience from his time with the Pirates. He was originally brought in by former OC Patrick Pimmel now with the AFL. Wilson had accuracy issues, and it culminated in a sub-50 % completion rate, even though he produced a league-leading 34 touchdown passes to 14 interceptions which also led the league. Wilson was also one of two full-time quarterbacks who played in ten or more games for the CIF.

Jayru Campbell

Jayru Campbell is as enigmatic as they come. A man who possesses more athletic ability than most players can ever dream of and who has watched his career held back by run-ins with law enforcement and injuries. A former Harlon Hill Trophy Winner and All GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year for Ferrus State in his home state of Michigan, Campbell originally signed with the IFL in 2021 with the Northern Arizona Wranglers. He would later play with the Bismarck Bucks as well.

At 6’5 215 pounds with the mobility to run at will, he is an ideal fit for the IFL, but the question with his latest issue with the law in 2022 in mind, is if Campbell can stay on the field and out of trouble. If he can, he might be in line for a potential award-winning season for the IFL. As an IFL starter Campbell completed 55% of his passes for 1,050 yards 24 touchdowns and 8 interceptions, adding 83 carries for 324 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground in 2021 before missing most of the 2022 season.

Update: Jayru did not report to camp, and the Gladiators have moved forward without him.

Javin Kilgo

Kilgo has a Championship in his back pocket from his time with the Salina Liberty in 2022. He returned to the Liberty in 2023 hoping to repeat his ‘22 performance but ultimately didn’t end up starting for the Liberty.

Kilgo is 6’4 210 pounds, and has been with Duke City in the past at times. He has signed to compete for the starting job in 2024, but he’s also currently signed to the Salina Liberty of the AFL as well. If Kilgo were released by Duke City I believe he would still pursue the contract with the Liberty but he has essentially given himself two chances to win a starting job for 2024 on two teams he knows well.

Update: Javin Kilgo has informed Salina Liberty he will be pursuing the opportunity with the Gladiators for the 2024 season. Kilgo is a resident of New Mexico so it is no surprise to see him choose to stay home.

Devond Blair

Devond Blair is an athletic player who has been thrust into a utility role everywhere he has gone to this point. Playing wide receiver, or taking snaps at other positions because he’s simply too talented to keep off the field. Heading into 2024 Blair has keyed in on making a full-time transition to quarterback. Training with quarterback coaches this offseason to prepare for this opportunity. Blair’s athleticism makes him a great fit for indoor football but he’s hoping to prove he is more than just what he can do with his legs. He is the type of talent that could come out of left field and produce an offensive player of the year caliber season.

Update: Reports are Blair opted to report to the Gladiators only to be released in camp leaving the Gladiators with Wilson, and Kilgo as their top two quarterbacks.

Thirteen: Sioux Falls Storm

Billy Hall

With Billy Hall as your QB1, you have a high ceiling, but currently, we don’t know what the floor is for Hall. Hall came out of college in 2022 from Reinhardt University. The current High School Head Coach at his alma mater Scott County High School, is a solid player but still mostly an unknown for the IFL.

Playing in 29 games for Reinhardt he produced 255 completions on 464 attempts collecting 4,132 yards, 45 passing tds to just 15 interceptions. He added 244 carries for 1,407 yards, and 17 touchdowns on the ground. He also fumbled 7 times. Hall participated in the pro-day with Kennesaw State where he worked out in front of NFL and CFL scouts. He ran a 4.63 40-yard dash and managed a 33-inch vertical jump.

Throwing passes to future NFL wideout Montrell Washington at the event, Hall looked like a capable professional prospect. This led him to sign with Winnipeg as a 2022 rookie. The 6’3 200 200-pound passer was a decent fit for the CFL game play given his mobility he was a solid fit as a true quarterback or their short yardage option if they chose. Unfortunately, Hall was released before the season began.

This left him in need of a place to play and this paved the road for him to sign with the Vegas Knight Hawks for the 2023 season. He would go on to appear in one game attempting 7 passes completing 4 for 66 yards and 1 touchdown. He added 2 carries for 5 yards. While Hall is not yet a proven commodity, his former coach in Vegas had this to say: “Billy is an amazing athlete that just happens to play QB. Hard working player that has superstar potential.”

Seth Collins

If you want your wildcard look no further than Seth Collins. The man played three different positions before he left college. Entering school as a quarterback, transitioning to wide receiver then moving to defensive back by the time he graduated. Collins might be the number two quarterback for Sioux Falls, but he could end up the WR4, RB3, add depth at defensive back, or even play special teams. We could see him serve a similar role to Blake Sims late in his career.

By the time he graduated from college, he had thrown 165 passes, carried the ball 130 times, caught 81 passes, and collected 16 tackles. While he began at Oregon State as a dual-threat quarterback he graduated from Texas Tech and entered the 2022 NFL Draft Class regarded as a strong safety standing 6’3 193 pounds. He went un-selected in the NFL draft process and from everything I have seen hasn’t played anywhere professionally as of yet.

During the 2023 NFL Draft cycle Collins attended Texas Tech’s pro day as a quarterback, working out in front of 20 NFL Scouts. A position he never played while attending the school. He must have looked good enough to warrant an IFL contract. Keep an eye on the Saskatchewan Roughriders if/when Seth Collins does have any sort of breakout performance, as a scout attended the Texas Tech pro day and saw firsthand what Collins can do. Perhaps some game film is all Collins now needs.

Dylan Van Boxel

Dylan Van Boxel is well-traveled. His college career began in North Dakota with the University of Mary, then he would attend the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, on to Rochester Community College in Minnesota, and finally to Kansas Wesleyan. Then his career took a trip to Germany with the Rostock Griffins. From Germany to Mexico with the Juarez Jefes. He would finish out 2022 with the Luebeck Cougars back in Germany. In 2023 he would try his hand at indoor football for the first time.

He would return to Kansas with the Topeka Tropics playing in 9 games he completed 42 of 75 passes for 348 yards 7 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. He averaged 5 yards per carry to the tune of 115 yards and 1 touchdown. He would finish out the year in Tucson with the Sugar Skulls as the backup to Ramone Atkins now with the AFL. Bringing in another experienced indoor football quarterback was key to Sioux Falls landing anywhere but 16.

Twelve: Tulsa Oilers

The Tulsa Oilers have one of the more interesting quarterback rooms in the league but there are a lot of unknowns still surrounding both players they currently have. Marvin Jones is heading into his second season with the Tulsa Oilers, he has one of the most supportive fan bases in the league, but fans and owners can only stand so much losing. Jones knows that, and has brought in two players he believes can lead the Oilers to the big game and continue the trend of worst to first in the IFL.

Jawon Pass

Jawon Pass’s career arc has led him straight into an Indoor Football League training camp for the 2024 season, and honestly, as I’ve talked about in the past this might be the best place for him to develop.

Pass is a very mobile quarterback who has always been known for his dual-threat abilities. Spending five seasons with Louisville he threw 382 passes completing 55.2% for 2,545 yards 14 touchdowns to 13 interceptions. He added 255 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. His best season came with Prairie View A&M in 2021 when he fell just shy of 3,000 all-purpose yards, and scored 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. After college, he would find his first professional playing time in the XFL appearing in 3 games with 1 start. He completed 10 of 20 passes for 89 yards, adding 5 carries for 20 yards. Could Pass flourish or flounder in the IFL?

Daniel Smith

Daniel Smith is the reason we don’t see this team lower on this list simply due to uncertainty about what Pass will accomplish in his transition to indoor football. Smith is an indoor/arena veteran who spent time starting for the Iowa Barnstormers in 2023 after the injury to Darius James-Peterson. Smith was previously with the West Texas Warbirds of the National Arena League before being released as WTX had fans saying WTF watching them cycle through quarterbacks to end the year.

Smith would sign with Iowa and play well when given the start. He would go on to finish second in passing attempts with 161 to Zach Reader’s 169 but completed 9 more passes than Reader. He was the only Barnstormers QB to top the 60% completion rate benchmark. He threw 19 touchdowns to 3 interceptions adding 150 rushing yards, and 6 more touchdowns in 12 games. Smith is the Ace up Marvin Jones’s sleeve if Pass doesn’t perform up to par.

Eleven: Quad City Steamwheelers

Rumors were that Ej Hilliard would no longer be with Quad Cities after the 2023 season. It appears rumors of the demise of his relationship with the Steamwheelers are accurate as the Steamwheelers will carry three quarterbacks into camp to compete for the opening.

Judd Erickson

Erickson is a Colorado native who grew up in Highland’s Ranch not far from where I spent my childhood. Despite this fact, I did not become aware of Erickson until he was playing professionally in the European League of Football in 2023. This was in spite of his time attending Colorado State University. Redshirting in 2017, Erickson spent just two seasons with CSU as a back-up before graduating and moving on to University of San Diego.

He would spend two seasons on the field with University of San Diego after the Covid 19 bans were lifted. Participating in 11 total games for the school he managed a 54% completion rate and 14 touchdowns to 10 interceptions, he added 1 touchdown reception as well. After college his first experience came with the BC Lions in their Rookie Mini-camp. He didn’t make the roster, and instead jumped across the pond to the ELF to finish out the season for the Cologne Centurions. In 2024 Erickson bounces to his third professional football league to see if he can find a role.

Mike Irwin

First of all, let me just say how excited I am that Mike Irwin was signed by an IFL team. He and I have been talking all offseason, I had forwarded his film to 9 different coaches in various leagues, and even though I had contact info for Quad City, I didn’t think to send his information over. Luckily fate intervened and someone still managed to spot the talent that I saw in Irwin since I first saw his highlight reel.

Irwin stands 6’1 205 pounds and isn’t going to win any strongman competitions anytime soon (Sorry Mike), but what he lacks in prototypical size, he makes up for with his intelligence, leadership, and the intangibles that every coach wants in a quarterback. Did I mention he has wheels? Mike Irwin can run.

Beginning his college career with the Oregon Ducks he utilized a redshirt immediately. He would later spend time at Tarleton, and Portland State University.

At the time when Irwin first reached out to me, he wasn’t very privy to the indoor football league than what they provided in terms of opportunities. He had spent the 2023 season primarily focused on trying to Landon XFL or CFL opportunity as do most rookies straight out of college. Now heading into 2024 he has signed with Quad City to make their roster and learn from a legend.

Asher O’Hara

O’Hara is an IFL unknown but looks to be another player suited for the IFL gameplay. O’Hara finished his career at Sacramento State playing in 25 total games over two seasons. He ran the ball 375 times for 1,599 yards and 28 touchdowns, including 937 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns in 2022. He produced more rushing touchdowns than passing touchdowns graduating with 18 passing touchdowns, on 254 attempts. He threw just 3 interceptions. O’Hara is such an athlete he had 2 receptions for 16 yards and 1 touchdown.

Before Sac State he played for Middle Tennessee University during his three seasons there, he played in 23 games. He managed a career year in 2019 when he passed for 2,616 yards and 20 touchdowns while adding 1,058 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns. He would leave the school with 6,434 yards of offense, 49 total touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. He left college with just under 10,000 all-purpose yards and 95 touchdowns. He has the perfect skill set for the IFL but he will be tasked with competing against Mike Irwin for the top backup spot. Regardless of who wins this battle, they will be poised to get a proper introduction to indoor football.

Ten: Green Bay Blizzard

The Green Bay Blizzard walked into 2023 with two unproven IFL quarterbacks and walked out with two proven IFL quarterbacks. They opted to trade Ja’rome “The Magic Man” Johnson to Vegas and commit to Max Meylor but was it the right decision?

Max Meylor

Last season It was Johnson not Meylor who began the season as the starter playing in 10 total games. Meylor seized the starting job after an injury to Johnson. Meylor stepped in and played in 11 total games. He completed 65% of his 175 passing attempts producing 1,240 yards 23 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. As a runner, he had 353 yards and 13 touchdowns on the year.

Meylor originally was signed by the MLFB in 2022 and was slated to compete for the starting job under Jerry Glanville. Instead, the league folded before they played a single game. This left Meylor out of entire football in 2022, signing with Green Bay in 2023. Meylor was a two-sport athlete in college playing football and basketball for Lindenwood. Playing as a forward he managed to shoot 47.5% from 3-point range. After 2018 he transferred to Wisconsin Whitewater playing in 26 total games attempting 528 passes, 4,328 yards 47 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions. He added 136 carries for 534 yards and 8 touchdowns. I expect We will see what he can do as a full-time starter this season, but we can’t count out Skyler Perry in this competition.

Skyler Perry

Perry attended the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff from 2018-2022 seeing playing time each year. He would play in 44 total games before entering the 2023 NFL Draft Class as a tremendous long shot. He did however have a decent resume with a 55% completion rate on 1,146 passing attempts. He collected 6,626 yards 41 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. Adding 984 yards and 8 touchdowns on the ground, and 1 catch for 17 yards.

Perry stands 6’3 215 pounds and is one of only a few left-handed quarterbacks on this list. He was invited to the HCBU Legacy Bowl in 2023. Between the HCBU Combine and his pro-day, he put up personal bests of:

4.58 40-yard dash

1.62 10-yard split

4.64 20-yard shuttle

33-inch vertical jump

9 1/8 inch hands

Impressive numbers, add to a promising career. The IFL could be the stepping stone he needs to put himself on the UFL/CFL radars for 2025.

Nine: Iowa Barnstormers

The Iowa Barnstormers have one of the top quarterbacks in the league in Darius-James Peterson, and if he returns 100% healthy (which IS expected after nearly a full year of rehab) he should go right back to being a top-five IFL quarterback. DJP’s deadliness hinges on his patented mobility. The big question here is how will back up Kyle King transition to indoor football should DJP’s knee not cooperate or suffer any setbacks.

Darius-James Peterson

DJP was able to suit up in 17 games during the 2022 season. He put up impressive numbers with 36 touchdowns on 301 attempts. He threw 18 interceptions, but also added 971 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. He well just shy of putting up 3,000 yards of offense for Iowa. During his offseason, DJP works with Dual Threat QB Academy teaching young quarterbacks how to play just like the potential IFL MVP candidate.

If DJP is 100%, Iowa stands to see the largest rise on this list over the year. The 5’11 190 pound signal-caller is easily one of the most ideal IFL quarterbacks in the league given his mobility, and willingness to run. We are talking about a guy who had 459 rushing attempts for 2,537 yards and 29 touchdowns while with Idaho. He matched his passing touchdown output on the ground each season at Idaho finishing with 29/29.

Kyle King

Kyle King is a 6’3 210 210-pound quarterback/punter from the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor. He attended the school from 2019-2022 but didn’t begin his collegiate career there. In 2018 he was an All-ASC Selection as a punter while serving as a backup quarterback as well. Transferring to Mary-Hardin proved to be the right decision when he took over as the starter in 2020 after spending 2019 playing with the JV program.

Playing in the next 31 games he attempted 716 passes completing 461 (64%), for 6,971 yards t84 touchdowns, and just 11 interceptions. King produced an 8:1 touchdown ratio in college as a passer, and we haven’t even discussed his role as a runner where he produced 743 yards and 18 touchdowns, including 11 touchdowns in 2021. During the 2021 season, he led his team to a National Championship. He now looks to transition to the IFL, where he could eventually garner outdoor attention in the CFL, or UFL if he sees the field. He also played in Germany for one game in 2023 but chose to try his hand at climbing the ladder in the US.
