NASCAR Week at Coronado 2026: Jets, Ships, and Speed

Written by Jesse Warren

As a lifelong NASCAR fan, I’ve seen the sport evolve in just about every way—new cars, new drivers, and constantly changing formats. But every once in a while, something comes along that feels bigger than the sport itself. This past weekend was one of those moments because it showed how far NASCAR can push beyond a normal race weekend.

Set at the historic Naval Base in Coronado, the event delivered a spectacle unlike anything NASCAR has attempted before. With a Top Gun–style theme and a backdrop of aircraft carriers, battleships, and hangars, it felt as much like a celebration as it did a race. Built as part of the U.S. Navy’s 250th birthday, the setting alone made it unforgettable.

Racing Lives Up to the Ambiance

The Truck Series brought late race drama, as 19-year-old Tyler Reif looked poised to capture his first win in a tight battle with Layne Riggs. But in a costly mistake at the final chicane, Reif went off track and was forced to serve a penalty that dropped him deep in the field, handing the victory to Riggs.

Saturday gave Richard Childress Racing a major lift. Austin Hill broke through to win his first career road-course race, delivering an emotional moment for the organization. Meanwhile, Corey Day put together one of the toughest drives of the weekend—overcoming damage from a manhole cover early in the race, running a backup car, and surviving a late-race wreck to still finish in the top ten.

Then came Sunday.

NASCAR Continues to Innovate

The Cup Series closed out the weekend with a tense final-stage battle between teammates Tyler Reddick and Corey Heim. In the closing laps, contact between the two sent Reddick into the wall, opening the door for Heim to take the win. The moment didn’t just decide the race—it shook up the championship picture, cutting Reddick’s once-comfortable lead down to just eight points over Denny Hamlin as the regular season winds down.

For me, the weekend hit even closer to home. I watched the Truck race with my dad, a Navy veteran. Seeing his reaction—even through a TV screen—said everything about how much this event meant. It’s hard to imagine what it must have felt like for fans there in person.

NASCAR has never been afraid to try something new, but this felt different. It wasn’t just another creative track or format—it was a full-scale experience that blended history, emotion, and competition into something unforgettable, proving NASCAR can push beyond a normal race weekend.

If this weekend proved anything, it’s that NASCAR isn’t just evolving—it’s pushing the limits of what the sport can be.
