OPINION PEICE-
I had the opportunity (and privilege) to attend the Kats-Firebirds game in Clarksville, and I was nothing short of awe-struck! In the past, I have seen the crowds, game day experience, and overall operations of a couple of teams in various leagues, but what we witnessed in F&M Bank Arena was something special! Here are the biggest takeaways:
Table of Contents
Clarksville Loves the Kats

This was the most striking part of the entire day, as you pull up and find a (very easily accessed) parking spot, you see the Royal Blue, Yellow, and white pouring down the friendly streets of Downtown Clarksville. It has the same feel as that of a small college team in the fall. Fans trickle into the midsize arena that is well secured and easy to navigate, and are immediately met with all the Kats merch you could want. Once you push past the stands and vendors, you’re met with a sight that isn’t all that common in the Modern arena game:
A crowd was already rocking the arena for over half an hour before kick-off.
Yes, the Kats have a history spanning as far back as the mid-90s, but you just feel the energy. The fans know players, coaches, and even game-day staff by name. They chant at every action. If you didn’t know the Kats and that they just returned in 2024, and just fully moved to Clarksville in 2026, you would have the impression they have been playing at F&M since the sport’s inception.
Outside of the Arena feels like a quaint division two college football crowd, but once they kick off, it has the same screams, boos, and passion as that of an SEC game in October. It’s a bucket list destination for any Arena Football fan.
F&M Bank Arena

This was another point we couldn’t get over; the arena almost seems as if it were built for arena football. The Bottom Dasher boards meet up with the crowd on both sides, giving lucky fans the ability to literally lean into the action. Even those who are seated in the end zones look as if they are hovering above the action. The smaller venue not only gives opposing kickers trouble, but it lets the crowd have a real effect on the gameplay.
For example, on third and fourth downs, you couldn’t hear anything but the roar reverberating off the ceiling and arena walls. It felt like the echo lasted minutes. Any big play was met with a roar. Over 3,000 Fans stomped and clapped against the top of the dashers. It’s how old-school arena football looks in replays from the early 2000s.
One big thing was the structure; you could tell who was who from league officials, all the way to game day staff from the stands. It was a well-oiled machine! The game break entertainment was well done and well timed. The scoreboard graphics and graphics timing were on par with an NBA game. They never missed an opportunity to utilize everything they had to keep the crowd engaged and, more often than not, featured the crowd.
Fans Engagement & Game Day Ops

It felt like a fan fest that just so happened to have a football game (and a historic day of kicking from Kaplan) happening simultaneously. Even if it was half as entertaining, it isn’t hard to sell the best team in the AF1, and one of the current best in all of the sport. Though if you show up to F&M Bank Arena for a Kats game, you get both the best and the best!
No matter the league, state of the game, or anyone’s opinion, the Kats need to be in Clarksville and taking to the turf for years to come. It’s a well-run organization with great community support, and we hope to see them around for decades to come.
